Trinidad isn’t as touristy as its sister island Tobago but this “hidden” gem breaks the mold of the typical Caribbean Island. Trinidad is more like its neighboring country of South America. The northern interior is mountainous, yet in central Trinidad lie low agricultural plains perfect to bike through. Skirted with beaches and crystal clear water, Trinidad is the Outdoorsman’s, Anglers and Divers ideal vacation retreat. Port of Spain, the capital city, is quite cosmopolitan with art galleries, quaint shops, modern malls, and restaurants – a high contrast to this otherwise ecological paradise. Be sure to adventure out to Argyle Falls, La Brea Pitch Lake, Caroni and Nariva Swamps, Asa Wright Nature Center, and Point-a-Pierre Wild Fowl Trust. Beaches such as Maracas Bay and Mazanilla Beach are a must.
The cuisine is a potpourri combining influences from India, Africa, China, Syria and Europe. Restaurants to consider are: Buzo Osteria Italiana, Ipanema Restaurant and Lounge, Moro Vino, Apsara Restaurant, and Prime. Even though Trinidad is an Anglers and Nature lovers dream, they still have their share of night life at places like 110 Jazz and Calypso Lounge, The Oasis, Barracuda, Club Liquid and LaRumba and of course there is always Carnival! Life is what you make it, so make it Trinidad.
Tobago Is A Unique Experience
Compared to Trinidad, Tobago outwardly appears to be party city. But there is much more to the 116 square miles that make it up. Home to the oldest protected rainforest in the Western hemisphere, the Main Ridge Forest Reserve, Tobago is home to over 6000 species of plants and animals and has earned the award of best eco destination in the world. Grafton Caledonia Wildlife Sanctuary is just one of many different types of Sanctuaries available for touring. Charlottesville, which overlooks the azure sea, is one of the most picturesque villages on the island and is worth the drive to get there. The city of Buccoo is home to the Goat and Crab Races which are held annually during the Easter holidays. There are two championship golf courses on the island, The Mount Irvine Golf Course and The Tobago Plantations Golf Course. And events not to be missed are the Tobago Fest (similar to Carnival) and Panorama – the annual competition for steel pan bands. Miles and miles of glorious beaches such as Nylon Pool, Castara Bay, Englishman’s Bay, Store Bay, and Pigeon Point Beach are always highly rated. Restaurants worth trying are: Salsa Kitchen Tapas Restaurant, La Tartaruga Italian Restaurant, King’s Bay Café, The Seahorse Inn, and La Cantina. A sampling of the seemingly never-ending nightlife includes: Bar Code, bonkers, Crystal Palace, Rouselle’s and The Flambeaux.
